Take Away 3/31
Today's class allowed my group to decide on a topic. We decided on Whats in your lunchbox: drinks edition. i am so excited to create this video with my group because i feel like it is a topic that children don't notice when choosing what to drink. The amount of sugar that is in one can of regular soda is mind blowing and i feel children need to know and understand what this is doing to their body. we will include many different kinds of drinks, Sports drinks, Caffeinated drinks, carbonated drinks, water, and juices.

Chapter 7 Reflection
Chapter 7 provides multiples methods and tools teachers can use to engage their students in exploring real-world issues and having their students solve authentic problems. Also within this chapter it provides ways for the students to be creative and use their individual curiosities. I believe that these two subjects are very important for teachers to incorporate within the classroom. The students should be taught social and life issues that they will experience in the future.
Two ways the chapter had provided methods for the teacher to provide a real-life experience are Google Earth, and educational computer games. As we saw in class on Monday Google Earth allows the students to travel anywhere they would like to go. Within this certain place they can see the street view as if they are the person walking down the street. This app can be used to allow students to compare different towns, areas of the world, countries, and different styles within houses. It allows students to go to places that they wouldn't be able to go on a field trip.
One game that I remember playing that allowed me to learn and experience the life of a certain time period was Oregon Trail. The game teaches students about the realities of 19th century pioneer life on the Oregon Trail. The student assumes the role of a wagon leader guiding his or her party of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon's Willamette Valley on the Oregon Trail via a covered wagon in 1848. Along the trail the students have to overcome problems like sick family members and broken parts on their wagon. The goal of the game is to reach the end of the trail with all of the family members and animals traveling with them. I think a game like Oregon Trail teaches the students exactly how people had live within this time period and all social studies games should be created like this one to teach the students all the different time periods.

One method the chapter talks about the incorporating the students creativity is using Kid Pix. Kid Pix allows the students to draw and paint anything they want which engages their ability to express their ideas creatively. Teachers can have students can create flashcards of numbers (for the younger students) and paint anything they want that will help them learn say the numbers 1-10.
Questions
1. How would you incorporate a program like Kid Pix so your students can be expressing their creativity and be learning at the same time or is their other programs that you have used in the past and see that it has worked?
2. What are some games that you remember playing in school that you thought were fun but related to educational topics too?

Take away 3/24
Watching the video about Minecraft being integrated within the computer classroom made me wonder how truly the video game related to what students should be learning in computers. when i was in computer class i remember playing games that improved my typing skills and computer skills. i was playing games that related to the topics i was learning within my main subjects. Even though the teachers had lesson plans going along with the game i think there is other programs that would work better. i understand that it is something the children enjoy but i do believe there is a line that should be drawn with children having fun and learning at the same time.

class takeaway 3/17
Todays class made me look at technology in a different way. Within growing up i feel like i was around technology a lot but my classmates made me realize that the generations below me are using technology even more. Digital citizenship needs to be taught to the younger generations so they know how to behave on the Internet. too many students are getting bullied throughout social media because the children do not know the correct way to act online the Internet. The children of our future need to learn how to become members of the community but as there teachers we need to teach them how to be these new members. so it it a learning process for both the children and the teachers.
Blog #4
Within chapter 4 the Technology based learning environment stuck out to me. i think having an outside website, like as we have blackboard, would be helpful to the students. Within this website the students can find out homework assignments, post their assignments online, or ask the teacher any questions they have. With this it leaves the students no excuse for them to not do their homework. This method can be used within an elementary classroom too but instead of the website to be used by the students it can be used by the parents. When the student seem to not remember the homework or forgot their homework sheet at school then the parents can simply receive the homework from the website.
Within the list of apps I think the Rosetta Course- Rosetta Stone, LTD. app is helpful for students and teachers. If a teacher has an ELL student in their classroom who doesn't speak English the teacher can use this app to learn some basic words from this students language and communicate better with this student. This App can provide a great learning experience for any student who wants to learn another language. Another app that i actually have and like to use is the Blackboard Mobile Learn App. This allows anyone who is apart of blackboard to access the files and assignments from any Mobile device. This is helpful because it allows you to receive alerts and notices the professors send out on the phone. also the average person has their phone near them more than a computer. Flashcards+ is another great app that I've used in the past. This allows your to create note cards to help you study for a test. No more having to carry 100 note cards for each test that you have during midterms or finals week.
One website that i love to use during with my students is Brainpop.com. this is website that does need login access from the school but provides a bunch of instructional videos that engages the children. There also is a Brainpopjr.com which allows the students to go on and watch videos about different subjects and topics they are learning. This website provides videos within the science, social studies, English, math, health, engineering & Technology, and arts & music subjects.
In chapter 6 it talks about bookmarking and social bookmarking which are tools that offer teachers ways to locate information and organize it effectively using the web. i think this is such a great idea because so many teachers have desks filled papers and important notices get lost very easily. if all this information is on a computer there wont have to be cluttered desks in every classroom. Social bookmarking is the same idea but other people can see your ideas. when a teacher finds a great lesson on a certain topic they can post it onto any social bookmarking website and it will be shared with the rest of the group. I love this idea because its nice to have other teachers looking out for each other. So many teachers are teaching the same topic so why not share their ideas with each other.
Questions
Within chapter 4 they provided 5 different Technology-Based methods to incorporating technology into the classroom. Which one can you see yourself using and why?
In chapter 6 they talk about virtual field trips, where would you want to take your class on a virtual field trip because you know its not realistic for the class to actually go there?

take away message 5/10
Coming into this class i always thought that wikipedia wasn't a good resource to use but after our discussion my thoughts have changed. even though people can go and edit the pages and articles it doesn't mean that it is all posted. i believe wikipedia can be used as a start for the students and also used as a tool. since there is a uncertainty with the information being provided on wikipedia this allows the students to go and research more into their topic and see if the information they are reading is true or false. even thought i believe it is better to know what your reading is providing you the correct information this allows the students to experience and learn more while using technology.

David H. Jonassen wrote an article called Computers as Mindtools for Engaging Learners in Critical Thinking. Within this article he believes that computer technologies should be used for all subject matters as a tool to help engage the students in a reflective and critical thinking about the ideas they are studying. I agree with Jonassen completely, technology shouldn't be used to teach the students but to help this teaching process. it can engage the students in different ways which maybe a teacher couldn't.
Within these chapters I realize how the internet isn't filled with all positive opportunities for our students. In specific chapter 5 talks about Wikipedia and the problem of students plagiarizing. there is so much out there on the internet and our students and they can basically find the answer to any question they have or have to answer. so as a future teacher i wonder how i am going to trust my students to not plagiarize. There are plenty websites put out there that aren't safe for the students to use. anything can be put on the internet so its important for the students to use the right resources to complete their research. as a future teacher i know that i will have to provide my students with these resources. Within different elementary schools there aren't always computer classes for the students to take. i feel like this puts an extra burden on the classroom teachers. they need the students to know how to use the computer and to know all the skills before hand so that they can be ready to learn and the teacher doesn't have to take the time to teach these skills and can teach what needs to be taught.
Questions
How can we as the future teachers help our students want to complete their own assignments and not have to feel like plagiarizing is better.
What are some safe websites that our students can use that will provide them with the correct information and not just something that anybody put on the internet?
