Take Away 4/14/14

From tonight's class i finally learned how to make my PowerPoint more interactive by providing different buttons within the slides instead of just clicking the mouse. I think this can bring my PowerPoint lessons to another level. One way i can see this being useful is within a math lesson. I feel like math lessons are very complex and provide students a lot of information. so it would be nice to organize the PowerPoint in a certain way so the students stay on track and don't lose focus. i also like this quiz idea at the end of the PowerPoint. it tests the students knowledge of what they have just learned and allows them to know what they need to study better. Another way i think this can be incorporated into my classroom is to create a Jeopardy game using these tools in PowerPoint. This can be something as a reward for the class and can make them want to study and do well on their assignments. Before tonight I've always wanted to do something like this but never knew how to implement it well. now that i know how to incorporate the different hyperlinks creating something like a Jeopardy game will be time consuming but much easier than before.

Chapter 8 & 9

After reading chapter 8 it made me realize how different my high school classes were compared to my college level classes. Within my high school classes i felt the Classroom Website was always missing. I think having the teachers provide the website for the students is very useful. Within this website the teacher can provide the homework assignments ahead of time, the rubric for the students to see, Notes in case a student missed a class or wasn't able to copy all the notes in time. Another part of the website that the teacher can provide is a letter or information for the parents. This would be really useful within an elementary classroom because then the parents can see the dates of field trips, projects, school notices, and homework assignments without having to rely on their child. When i went to St. Johns every classroom had a syllabus or a website on blackboard and i think its great for the students to be able to see the layout of the class and work that was needed to be done.
Another area of chapter 8 that stuck out to me was the email concept. Within high school not many teachers provided the students an email address to contact them. Within College emailing is the only way professors and students contact each other other than within the classroom. Providing the students an email allows them to communicate with their teacher 24/7. With technology today 90% of people receive their email on their phones making it easier to answer emails. I can see the issue of teachers not wanting to give their students their personal email address but there are so many websites that allow you to make a new email address allowing the teacher to just use that for their classes.

Chapter 9 really focuses on Multimodal learning which is when the teacher combines spoken words with visuals or written text and audio. Having a teacher engage in all of the Multimodals allow every type of student feel engaged and included. If a student is a visual learner than he or she will learn better from engaging visuals, or if there is a student who is a tactile learner he or she will comprehend better from interactive activities.
One tool Chapter 9 provides for a teacher to use is PowerPoint. I've used and seen teachers use PowerPoint all throughout high school and college and i think it is great. I think PowerPoint, when used in the right way, can be entertaining, interactive, and useful for the students. It can help the students stay on track with their note taking and teachers can incorporate educational games within their units as a reward for the class. One game ive seen being used is Jeopardy. This is a great tool to use the day before a test to help the kids study. The teacher can even give the team that wins a bonus on their test or quiz. Another great reason i think PowerPoint is useful is that the teachers can upload their PowerPoint presentations within their classroom website and allow the kids to download it and print it out. This would be helpful for the kids who cant write quick enough during class or the kids that learn better from just listening.

Questions

Do you feel like within your college experience you were provided with more information (like hw assignments early and test dates) more than in high school? If so did you like it better?

I've only used Powerpoint what are other software that teachers can used that are like Powerpoint? Do you like them better than Powerpoint?

Class Review

From my previous experience and after this class i would say i am at a 10 when working with my E-Portfolio. I think this is because within my student teaching experience we were constantly updating our portfolios with our current work. even with my portfolio being current i still realized that after class today there are still some things that can and should be updated especially my student work/cards tab. One quote that will stick with me from tonight's class is experience + revision = Learning. i really agree with this quote because one people experience a certain thing they need to take the time and learn from their experience. they need to recognize the benefits of this experience and grow from the negatives. with each experience a person goes through i think it builds them as a person in a different way.

Take Away 3/31

Today's class allowed my group to decide on a topic. We decided on Whats in your lunchbox: drinks edition. i am so excited to create this video with my group because i feel like it is a topic that children don't notice when choosing what to drink. The amount of sugar that is in one can of regular soda is mind blowing and i feel children need to know and understand what this is doing to their body. we will include many different kinds of drinks, Sports drinks, Caffeinated drinks, carbonated drinks, water, and juices.

Chapter 7 Reflection

Chapter 7 provides multiples methods and tools teachers can use to engage their students in exploring real-world issues and having their students solve authentic problems. Also within this chapter it provides ways for the students to be creative and use their individual curiosities. I believe that these two subjects are very important for teachers to incorporate within the classroom. The students should be taught social and life issues that they will experience in the future.
Two ways the chapter had provided methods for the teacher to provide a real-life experience are Google Earth, and educational computer games. As we saw in class on Monday Google Earth allows the students to travel anywhere they would like to go. Within this certain place they can see the street view as if they are the person walking down the street. This app can be used to allow students to compare different towns, areas of the world, countries, and different styles within houses. It allows students to go to places that they wouldn't be able to go on a field trip.
One game that I remember playing that allowed me to learn and experience the life of a certain time period was Oregon Trail. The game teaches students about the realities of 19th century pioneer life on the Oregon Trail. The student assumes the role of a wagon leader guiding his or her party of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon's Willamette Valley on the Oregon Trail via a covered wagon in 1848. Along the trail the students have to overcome problems like sick family members and broken parts on their wagon. The goal of the game is to reach the end of the trail with all of the family members and animals traveling with them. I think a game like Oregon Trail teaches the students exactly how people had live within this time period and all social studies games should be created like this one to teach the students all the different time periods.

One method the chapter talks about the incorporating the students creativity is using Kid Pix. Kid Pix allows the students to draw and paint anything they want which engages their ability to express their ideas creatively. Teachers can have students can create flashcards of numbers (for the younger students) and paint anything they want that will help them learn say the numbers 1-10.

Questions
1. How would you incorporate a program like Kid Pix so your students can be expressing their creativity and be learning at the same time or is their other programs that you have used in the past and see that it has worked?

2. What are some games that you remember playing in school that you thought were fun but related to educational topics too?
